We often hear that Maharashtra is India’s wealthiest state. But if we talk about the wealthiest community, it’s not the Marathi people but the Gujaratis. Think of big names like Ambani, Adani, and Azim Premji—they’re all Gujaratis. In fact, out of India’s top billionaires, 54 are from Gujarat!

Gujaratis are incredibly successful in business. Although they make up only 5% of India’s workforce, they run 10% of all companies and are responsible for 22% of India’s exports. And it’s not just in India; they’re successful worldwide too! For example, though only about 1% of the U.S. population is Indian—and an even smaller number are Gujarati—they own over 50% of America’s Hotels & motels. Most of these motel owners are from Gujarat’s Patel community, which has dominated this industry.

In both the U.S. and the U.K., Gujaratis own some of the biggest businesses, from motels to pharmacy chains. They are seen as some of the best merchants in India, known for their calm nature, simple lifestyles, and strong business sense. But what makes Gujaratis so good at business? Let’s find out.

To understand this, let’s first look at Gujarat’s history and geography. Gujarat has always been a great business place. It has the longest coastline in India—1,600 km long—making it a natural hub for trade since ancient times. This coastal advantage helped Gujaratis build a strong business culture.

But it’s not just geography; it’s their mindset and culture that give them an edge. Famous businessman Dhirubhai Ambani once said, “Follow your dreams, or someone else will hire you to fulfil theirs.” This is the attitude that drives Gujaratis to become business owners rather than job seekers. In Gujarat, few people are prepared for government jobs; most want to start their own businesses.

The Secret to Gujarati Business Success

One of the main reasons for their success is their close-knit community. Almost every Gujarati family has at least one relative in business. So, if someone wants to start a business, they can easily get guidance, capital support, and a strong network. This connected community helps them grow and succeed.

Additionally, Gujaratis are raised in a business-minded environment where they often hear about profit and growth. Children naturally lean toward business because they see successful business people as role models, unlike in other states where government jobs might be the dream career.

Influence of Jainism

Another reason Gujaratis are successful is the influence of Jainism. Jainism, which came to Gujarat in the 4th century, teaches peace, patience, and non-violence. These qualities are important for business and help Gujaratis stay calm and focused.

Risk-Taking and Innovation

Gujaratis are not afraid to take risks. They stay updated with new technologies and adapt quickly. This mindset helps them thrive in any business environment and makes it possible for someone from a simple background to become one of the richest people in India.

For example, when the motel industry in America was struggling, Gujaratis saw an opportunity. Americans were avoiding investing in motels because profits were low, but the Patels thought long-term. Many Gujarati families moved to the U.S., and instead of hiring staff, family members ran the motels themselves, saving costs. Slowly, they ended up owning more than half of America’s motels!

This drive for business success isn’t new for Gujaratis; it goes back thousands of years. With a prime location on India’s west coast, Gujarat has been involved in trade since the time of the Indus Valley Civilization.

This background, along with their cultural values and support system, makes Gujaratis not only India’s top business community but also leaders in global business.
